How to Apply Heat-Seal Barcode Labels to Garments and Textiles

Heat-seal labels give garments and textiles a permanent barcode with no sewing. Applied correctly, they stay on and stay readable through repeated washing, drying and dry cleaning. Here's how to get a perfect bond every time.

What you need

  • Heat-seal barcode labels (pre-printed, or blank rolls printed with a resin ribbon)
  • A heat seal machine with temperature, time and pressure control
  • A clean, dry, flat area of fabric, usually the care label or an inside seam

Step by step

  1. Set the machine. A typical starting point is about 190 °C (375 °F) for a few seconds with firm pressure. Use the settings supplied with your labels.
  2. Peel the label from its release liner without touching the adhesive.
  3. Place it adhesive side down on the care label or seam, in the same position on every garment so it's quick to find and scan.
  4. Press for the full cycle. Don't lift early.
  5. Cool and check. Let it cool for a moment, then check the edges are fully bonded and the barcode scans.

Fabric tips

  • Cotton, polyester and blends bond well at standard settings.
  • Heat-sensitive fabrics need lower temperature or shorter time. Test on a sample first.
  • Avoid seams, thick embroidery and textured areas; the label needs even contact.

Troubleshooting

ProblemLikely fix
Edges lifting after washingIncrease time or pressure slightly; check the lower pad isn't worn.
Fabric shiny or scorchedLower the temperature or shorten the time; use a release sheet.
Barcode won't scanCheck print quality and ribbon type; resin ribbon is needed for durability.
Inconsistent resultsUse a machine with digital temperature and timer control, and keep settings fixed.

Why heat-seal instead of sewn tags?

Heat-seal labels go on in seconds, don't need sewing skills, sit flat, and don't fall off like paper tags. Barcodes make every garment trackable through intake, processing, assembly and pickup, which is why laundries, dry cleaners, uniform programs, hospitals and hotels use them.
