Custom Manufacturing in India: A Buyer's Checklist
Whether you're an importer, distributor or brand, a clear brief gets you a faster, more accurate quote and fewer surprises. Use this checklist before you contact a custom manufacturer, us included.
1. Define the product
- Drawing, sample or clear photos with dimensions
- Materials, finish and colours
- Critical dimensions and tolerances: what must be exact, and what can vary
- How the product is used, and what it must survive (washing, heat, outdoors, chemicals)
2. Quantities and price
- Pilot quantity, first order and expected annual volume
- Target price per unit, and where you'll sell it
3. Branding and packaging
- Logo on the product (stamped, printed or labelled)
- Packaging type, retail or bulk, and carton markings
- Barcodes (UPC/EAN) and your part numbers
4. Compliance in your market
List any rules your product must meet where you sell it. Examples are chemical and material restrictions such as REACH in the EU or California Proposition 65 in the US, food-contact requirements for kitchenware, and labeling rules. Share any test reports you need.
5. Samples and quality checks
- Agree what the approved sample is: it becomes the standard for production.
- Define inspection points: dimensions, finish, function, packing.
- Decide whether you'll inspect before shipment yourself or through a third party.
6. Shipping and terms
- Incoterms: for example EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP, which decide who pays freight, insurance and duties
- Sea or air freight, destination port or warehouse
- Payment terms and lead time for first and repeat orders
